Question:
It occured to me the other day that no one refers to ceremonies as "double ring" anymore. Since the designation used to mean something special that there were two rings (man & woman), I assume there was a time that men didn't receive a ring? If so, can you tell me when it became the custom for 2 rings & why? Laurie
Answer:
Laurie,
That is an excellent question.I have not been asked that before, and there is not much information around about that subject ,but I will tell you what I found in research.
In ancient times the Jews gave gifts of rings as the betrothol before Christian times and was an important feature in wedding ceremonies. The reason why the ring was pitched upon for the pledge rather than anything else was because the ring was a seal and a thing of value and was admitted into the highest trust for which it was adopted into the wedding ceremony in marriage to denote the wife being espoused to the man. This also meant she was admitted to his counsel and joint partner in his honour and estate.
Ancient history also states that the engagement ring originally did double duty as the wedding ring and was made of solid gold. The circular shape of the ring was the Egyptian symbol for eternity signifying a life time commitment.
The Ancient explanation of where the ring should be placed ,was in the English book of common prayer it orders that the ring should be placed on the fourth finger left hand .We say third finger left hand but all Ancient history states 4th finger left hand.
The ring also symbolized the stability of affection. The round form meaning our respect shall never end. This is probably why men started wearing the ring for mutual respect.
Ancients thought that there was a view that came from the heart,so the ring being worn on 4th finger left hand it would always be in view and worn on a finger less used and would never be worn out,as well as be a lasting token of the covenant that must never be forgotten.
The Greek church directs the ring be worn on the right hand because it symbolized, power ,independents, authority.
The Hebrews believed wearing the ring on the left hand symbolized subjection of the wife to the husband.
Here is some wedding ring trivia from folklorist.
In Ancient ritual of marriage the ring was placed by the husband on top of the wifes thumb left hand with the words"In the name of the father,he then removed it to the forefinger with the words "and of the son" then to the middle finger with the closing words "Amen".
